Alcohol Poisoning Drinking too much alcohol for your age and weight can cause you to have alcohol poisoning. Unfortunately, there is no way to actually be able to deterimine (when a person passes out) whether there is so much alcohol in their blood that they are in danger of dying. If the person does have alcohol poisoning, without immediate proper medical treatment they could have irreversible brain damage. In some cases, even death has occurred. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome During pregnancy, drinking alcohol can be extremely dangerous to the fetus. Many babies have been born with fetal alcohol syndrome. This condition makes it difficult for the baby to thrive physically, emotionally, and even intellectually. In some cases, the effects carry on through the individual’s entire life. Diabetes/Diabetic Coma It is quite common for people who drink alcohol excessively to become diabetic. Unfortunately, a lot of these people continue to drink large amounts of alcohol even though their doctors warn them of the dangers. When a person like this goes into a diabetic coma, the results can be deadly. There have been many cases where the person has lost their sight and even may lose the use of a limb. Liver and/or kidney Failure Many people who are heavy drinkers die from liver and/or kidney failure. Since the liver and kidneys help clean our bodies of toxins, they overwork trying to eliminate the alcohol, and eventually shut down. Brain Damage, Seizures, Death Hospitals and nursing homes have numerous alcoholics who can no longer care for themselves. In many cases, they are no longer able to communicate or function at all. These people are said to have ‘wet brains’, often suffering from seizures also. Although some of them continue to exist in this condition for some time, eventually their organs quit functioning and they succumb to death.
